This presentation examines the practical and legal considerations surrounding easements and property damage during pipeline maintenance and operations. It provides a clear explanation of easement rights and responsibilities, distinguishing between the interests of the operator and the property owner. Attendees will explore common types of property damages, including temporary and permanent impacts, and gain insight into how such damages occur during routine, emergency, and construction‑related activities.

The session walks through the end‑to‑end damage management process, including initial identification, site inspection, documentation, responsibility determination, damage valuation, and compensation methodologies such as cost‑to‑cure and direct reimbursement. Emphasis is placed on best practices, effective communication with stakeholders, and the importance of fair, timely settlement to minimize disputes, protect relationships, and reduce long‑term liability. The presentation concludes with key takeaways designed to help operators, right‑of‑way professionals, and land agents navigate claims confidently while ensuring compliance, consistency, and trust.

Mark Isanhart

Right of Way and Claims Specialist, Wolverine Pipe Line Company

Mark Isanhart is a Right of Way and Claims Specialist with Wolverine Pipe Line Company, bringing nearly three decades of experience in the energy industry. He began his career in 1996 working on pipeline projects in Western Michigan and spent 15 years as a Landman, earning the Certified Professional Landman (CPL) designation from the American Association of Professional Landmen. In 2011, Mark transitioned into Right of Way–focused roles, serving as Project Manager/Team Lead on numerous interstate and intrastate pipeline projects, as well as site acquisitions for solar, wind, and battery storage developments. Since joining Wolverine Pipe Line Company in 2020, he has served as a corporate representative in legal proceedings and as a public information officer during emergency responses. Mark is an active industry speaker and leader, currently serving as Vice President and International Pipeline Chair of IRWA Chapter 7 and as Treasurer of the Michigan Association of Professional Landmen.
