Navigating Nevada Water Rights
Nevada's water-rights regulatory framework reflects the unique challenges of administering and managing limited water resources in the driest state in the nation. This presentation will provide an introduction to Nevada water law, including the fundamental principles governing water rights and the administrative process of obtaining and perfecting a permit, from application to certificate. It will also explore considerations involved in acquiring existing water rights.
The presentation will also address practical challenges in water-rights administration and management, along with recent regulatory and legislative developments affecting water rights in Nevada. Attendees will gain a foundational understanding of Nevada water law and the processes and considerations that influence water-rights acquisition, development, and management.
"Pre-1993 Mining Claims: Overstaking, Land Rights, and the Push for a Legislative Solution"
The overstaking of pre-1993 mining claims on federal public lands has created significant uncertainty surrounding mineral rights, claim validity, and land tenure across the Western United States. This presentation will provide background on the historical circumstances and regulatory changes that contributed to the issue, the implications for existing claimholders and mineral exploration, and the challenges facing the mining industry today. Lyndsey Wright, Executive Director of the Women’s Mining Coalition (WMC), will also discuss the Coalition’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness, educate congressional leaders and federal agencies in Washington, D.C., and advocate for a legislative solution that protects existing mineral rights and provides greater certainty for future mineral development.
