Landman Basics Certificate Program

Launching early 2027!

The Landman Basics Certificate Program is designed as a practical introduction to the business and legal fundamentals of oil and gas land work. The course gives participants a working understanding of how mineral ownership is created and transferred, how oil and gas leases are negotiated and administered, and how land professionals support drilling, title, acquisitions, operations, contracts and asset management throughout the life of an asset.

Rather than approaching the subject as a purely academic exercise, the course is structured around the actual workflows land professionals encounter in the field and in the office. Participants will be introduced to the key documents, terminology, ownership concepts and business issues that show up repeatedly in upstream landwork. The program is intended to build a strong foundation for those entering the profession or for adjacent professionals who need to better understand how land fits into the broader E&P organization.

Participants who complete the program and successfully satisfy the course assessment requirements will receive a Landman Basics Certificate – Foundation of Energy Land Practices. This certificate recognizes successful completion of introductory training in the core legal, commercial and operational principles of oil and gas land work, including mineral ownership, leasing, title fundamentals, land administration and due diligence.

Recommended Audience: This certificate program is intended for new landmen, land technicians, interns, lease and division order analysts, accounting personnel who work with land data and other non-land professionals who need a practical working knowledge of upstream land functions.
