With a unique blend of education, advocacy and storytelling, AAPL’s Landman Now podcast is delivering the voice of the land professional across the energy air waves. The show is hosted by AAPL Senior Creative Designer Chad Smith and stars real landmen recruited from AAPL’s membership roster. Since its launch, the podcast has gained momentum — tallying 7,593 total plays and 3,495 unique listeners. With a growing audience, Landman Now is proving to be a valuable platform for sharing the real stories and issues that shape the land profession.
The most listened-to content so far is AAPL’s special companion podcast series that followed the hit Paramount+ TV show Landman produced by Taylor Sheridan and starring Billy Bob Thornton as the problem-solving hero landman, Tommy Norris. Episodes 1 and 2 of the companion series garnered over 1,900 plays as AAPL set the record straight — separating Hollywood theatrics from real-world truth. While Hollywood may serve up the drama for TV, AAPL’s Landman Now podcast delivers the facts, straight from the real land professionals who live the story every day.
Beyond the screen, Landman Now dives into the core of the profession with episodes covering AAPL’s RL, RPL and CPL certification opportunities, ethics in landwork, career opportunities and student initiatives, the history and mission of AAPL, different challenges facing independent contractors and company landmen, and legislative and regulatory issues being tracked and addressed through AAPL’s governmental advocacy efforts. Other episodes explore how the landman’s role is expanding beyond oil and gas into renewables and emerging energy sources.
A recent episode featuring Natalie Johns and Randy Nichols offers an insightful look at how landmen are leading the charge in renewables. Their dynamic discussion highlights real-world opportunities and challenges in this growing sector — it’s a must-listen for anyone curious about the landman’s evolving role in the energy expansion.
With a loyal listener base in the United States — particularly a strong engagement from energy hubs like Dallas, Houston, Denver and Tulsa — Landman Now is giving the land community a national (and international) voice. We have gained surprising and welcomed interest from listeners in NYC, Canada and the U.K. Whether unpacking industry issues, sharing fun field stories or explaining “What is a landman?” to the broader public, the podcast is a powerful supplemental tool for telling the landman’s story — past, present and future.
